Local Meats
Finding high quality, naturally raised meat at affordable prices can be difficult. Yet the health benefits and the improved flavour are considerable. To make it easier for our members to have steady and convenient access to quality meat, Quantum CrossFit has partnered with local farmers to bring meat directly to you. We currently use Brookers Farm and Field Sparrow Farm.
We have a variety of meat in our freezer, including 100% grass fed beef, naturally raised pork and chicken. Other meat can be ordered via special order.
Brookers Natural Meat
Brooker’s Natural Meats are selected from only premium local Ontario farms. Our animals are born and raised with care. They are grass fed, and are free from growth hormones and antibiotics. They are raised naturally and as stress free as possible. Our animals are never in crowed feedlots and allowed to grow at their natural rate.
All of Brooker’s Natural Meat products come from provincially inspected plants. Consumers can rest assured that Ontario has one of the most comprehensive provincial meat inspection systems in Canada.
Anytime slaughter is taking place at one of licensed abattoirs, An OMAFRA (Ontario Ministry of Argiculture Food & Rural Affairs) inspector must be present. Live animals are inspected before and after slaughter to ensure that no unhealthy animals are introduced to the food chain. The OMAFRA inspector also is responsible for inspecting the premises and operational practices.
The meat inspection program used is supported by a range of full-time support staff that includes veterinary scientists, food scientists, regulatory specialists, regional veterinarians and appointed veterinary inspectors.
Field Sparrow Farms
Field Sparrow Farms is a family-run business. Henry and Sarah Bakker believe responsible and innovative farming strategies benefit our customers, producers, the community as a whole, and the health of the earth. We are committed to producing premium beef in an ecologically sustainable way and providing our customers with a local alternative to factory-farmed beef.
In the summer, we practice intensive grazing. Our pastures are divided into paddocks so that the cows graze all the grasses and legumes instead of just eating their favorite treats and leaving behind the others. Once the paddock has been grazed to a certain level, the animals are then moved to a new paddock. This gives the pasture time to recover and keep the land healthier.
In the winter, the animals are fed a mix of hay and higher-protein wrapped hay. They can take shelter in the barn but can also walk in the pasture when they want.
Why Grass Fed
Cows are meant to eat grass which is why they have four stomachs. Compared with feedlot beef, grass-fed has less total fat, less saturated fat, less cholesterol, and less calories. It also has more vitamin E, beta carotene, vitamin C, Omega 3 fatty acids, and conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) which is an anti-carcinogen. Grass-fed beef also tastes better and will help you get SHREDDED!
Field Sparrow Farms’ beef is grass-fed and naturally-raised. In addition:
- Cows receive plenty of exercise and fresh water to keep them healthy
- A Minimal amount of grain (oat and barley mix) are used in the finishing, but the farm is working to minimize this
- Beef is aged for a minimum of 14 days to enhance flavour and tenderness.
- There is NO use of growth hormones.
- The finishing grains contain NO GMOs and absolutely NO animal by-products
